College football got off to a rather fantastic start in week one, which saw me go a redoubtable 11-3 in the picks. It would have been 12-2, mind you, but Wisconsin went and gagged away a 17-point second half lead against an LSU team with no quarterbacks in my big upset of the week. Thanks Wisconsin!
Now for week two, traditionally the dullest week of the season – but hey, at least we’re done with regular season neutral site games for another 51 weeks!
Oklahoma 52, Tulsa 14 – I’m picking this game to show you that there are no worthwhile early games in college football this weekend.
Penn State 34, Akron 10 – Seriously – don’t even wake up until 3:30 EST.
Stanford 34, USC 23 – Everyone looks good at home in week one against Fresno State, boys.
Ole Miss 35, Vanderbilt 17 – Back when Mississippi was bad and irreverent a few years ago, they welcomed Auburn to the grove and told them to wear their blue uniforms so Ole Miss could suit up their grays, and, well, you get the idea.
Oregon 34, Michigan State 32 – It might take another call to spur the dramatic evolution of Pac 12 officiating, but I just don’t see a Big Ten team playing their first road game of the year walking into Autzen Stadium and winning.
Auburn 55, San Jose State 23 – By the way, I still love that freaking game. People forget that Oregon almost threw everything away by letting OU return a squib kick about 70 yards before blocking the game winning field goal.
Notre Dame 31, Michigan 27 – This is the last scheduled game between these two, meaning from now going forward we won’t be able to see the death of these two blue-blooded programs and Midwestern football in general in stark real time. Too bad.
Texas 34, BYU 23 – This matchup last year got Texas’ defensive coordinator fired after just the second game of the season. Good times!
Ohio State 41, Virginia Tech 23 – Remember when the Hokies were good? Seems like a long time ago now.
Oregon State 37, Hawaii 30 – Love this Mike Riley quote: “We’re over the novelty of going to Hawaii for a vacation.”
