What a week. Steve Spurrier resigned, Steve Sarkisian checked into rehab and was fired not 24 hours later, and my reverse jinx on Florida worked when their starting quarterback Will Grier was suspended for PED use.
Last week I went 9-5 in the picks, losing three of those five games in overtime. My season mark is at 47-28 – and this college football season is just getting good.
Baylor 58, West Virginia 24 – Dana Holgorsen’s record at WVU since 2012 is 21-23; his only redeemable quality at this point seems to be his passing resemblance to Owen Wilson.
Northwestern 17, Iowa 13 – The biggest, biggest mistake you can make is thinking Iowa is good. Iowa is never good.
Texas A&M 34, Alabama 31 – One of the lesser known credos of this column is always pick the team trying to avenge the 59-point loss.
Oklahoma 41, Kansas State 31 – Oklahoma could be incredible if they eliminate those two games a year when they just lie down and die.
Michigan 24, Michigan State 7 – Michigan hasn’t been scored on since 1974.
Washington State 34, Oregon State 27 – There have been many great Mike Leach moments, but this might be the greatest Mike Leach moment.
LSU 23, Florida 10 – Now for Les Miles’ thoughts on Columbus Day: “Let’s just not confuse Columbus Day with St. Paddy’s Day or some other more noteworthy day like Presidents’ Day, et cetera. So thanks.
TCU 61, Iowa State 24 – Now for Les Miles’ thoughts on South Carolina playing a home game at LSU last week: “There’s a time where you let the circumstance benefit those who are not benefited by the circumstance.”
Notre Dame 27, USC 21 – The downfall of Steve Sarkisian was predictable and sad, and it’s hard to see any way back for SC Athletic Director Pat Haden.
Ohio State 31, Penn State 20 – Maybe, after all of that, Braxton Miller is Ohio State’s best quarterback?
Utah 34, Arizona State 9 – With everything that’s gone on this season, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that a program with the stability of Utah has risen to the fore.
Washington 21, Oregon 20 – If you can’t beat Washington State at home, you can’t beat Washington on the road – and how many Oregon fans wish they had Chris Petersen right now?
And finally, Les Miles’ thoughts on the LSU-Florida game kicking off at 6:00 PM: “It’ll be dusk. The opportunity for night to arrive.”
Enjoy the weekend, everybody!
