The Tampa Bay Buccanneers will be wearing commemorative pins this season in memorium of Malcolm Glazers recent passing. You may get a different song in the UK if you go to a Manchester United game, but it too may be about the passing of Mr. Glazer: just not so much on a sour note as this youtube video shows how hated he is there.
While we tend to think of the Glazers as quiet, behind the scenes football owners, in the UK, they consider the Glazer family greedy capitalists that are sucking the money out of their beloved franchise and stuffing their pockets, or maybe, building up their American team they love so much, the Bucs!
Gareth Platt, interviewer for International Business Times UK wrote an article on the subject in which they interviewed me to get a heartbeat on the Tampa Bay feel to the Glazers.
Man U fans have a lot in common with us Bucs fans, they too felt the Glazers deserted them when a lack of ‘Free Agent Spending’ from ’07-’11 frustrated them. The Glazers have since started spending money on United, just as they’ve opened their pocketbooks for the Bucs.
I explained to Mr. Platt about the economic downturn and how it affected the Glazers after their costly takeover attempt of the biggest sports franchise in the world. But Brits think that the Glazers are to blame for current bad times because they didn’t spend any money on the team back during those lean years, and now they have their own version of Greg Schiano running the program over there!! They feel the Glazers have turned Man U into a cash cow and from what I learned I can see they have a beef.
Bucs fans have little room to complain, the Glazers lowered ticket prices and offered financing on ticket plans. United Fans going to games at Old Trafford had their ticket prices raised!
Platt admits that the Glazers have been spending as much money as any team in Europe now, but I don’t think the charitable efforts of the Glazers are as well known in the UK as they are here. I sent them a list of 150 charities the Glazers participate in, and I don’t think anyone in the UK sees the family in the same light.
