Friday afternoon is a dead zone for media.
Most people are focused on wrapping up their week so they can get to whatever plans they have for the weekend. The usage rate for all media – TV, Radio, Internet… they all dip on Friday PM into the night.
Dropping news releases during this time is the equivalent of waiting until mom and dad have a bottle of wine in their bellies before informing them that ‘school isn’t for you’.
It’s called a ‘media dump’. And the Cardinals dropped one right in the sweet spot:
#stlcards pitcher Adam Wainwright underwent arthroscopic procedure today to trim small piece of cartilage in his right elbow.

Ohai- What’s going on the Twitter… UH. Come again on this ADAM WAINWRIGHT SURGERY?!
Here we go again.
Turns out that this covert news dump wan’t even all that well coordinated. Hardball Talk is reporting that there are conflicting stories about what procedure was actually done.
Wainwright either had tendons or cartilage “trimmed”. You know, because it’s just an elbow. Same thing as the mop on your head.
If it were any other medical staff in pro sports besides the Cardinals, the ambiguity of the surgery in and of itself wouldn’t be all that alarming. But it’s the Cardinals.
– PANIC –
The fact that earlier in week Wain-O and the Cardinals were just going to get the workhorse starter some rest is alarming:
Wainwright visited with the medical staff on Friday, and they found no reason to have long-term concern about Wainwright’s elbow. The Cardinals plan for him is to have a normal offseason during which he’ll benefit primarily from rest. The club will likely cut back on Wainwright’s workload in spring training to compensate for his innings count over the past two seasons.
Four days later and Mr. Wainwright has been done knifed up. So either the Cardinals misleading, the doctors were wrong with their diagnosis or everyone is just kind of guessing.
No worries, though. 10 hours of secret audio recordings have been unearthed exclusively by The CD:

Let’s wish Adam the best in his recovery. But when it comes to Cardinals operations, we’ll go ahead and wait to see him in Spring Training pitching before we’re ready to deem any surgery “minor”, thank you very little.
