The Brewers finished the Arizona portion of the pre-season by besting the Angels’ “dregs”, 4-2, (see box), as Chris Capuano went 5 IP, allowed 5 hits, and 1 ER in his last appearance before the regular season. Milwaukee finishes Cactus League play with a 13-16 mark, and pack up and take to the road, heading to Arlington, Texas, for two exhibition games Friday and Saturday night. I can’t understand the rationale in playing these games, other than their must be money involved…I would imagine that the bulk of the equipment gets packed up and flown to Milwaukee for the home opener…and why risk having players get hurt? I suppose these are games that would have been played in Arizona, anyway, and being in a real ballpark helps the players get somewhat mentally prepared for the season.
The roster? Ned Yost claims he still hasn’t decided between Vinny Rottino and Tony Gwynn, Jr. for the last position player spot, nor between José Capellan, Greg Aquino, and Chris Spurling for the last bullpen spot.
The Dodgers will send former Red Sock Derek Lowe out for the opener on Monday…Lowe faced the Brewers twice last year–a May start in LA that resulted in a no decision, and a win in Milwaukee in September…Lowe last 7+ innings in both starts, and only allowed 2 ER over 15.33 IP last year; the Dodgers did not see Ben Sheets either last year, or in Cactus League this year…should be a good one.
