After reports about Redskins’ Robert Griffin III possible termination arose in recent weeks, numerous sports sites, NFL experts and teammates have expressed their opinion about this rumor. Some fans wonder whether the ‘Skins would be better off by starting Colt McCoy. COLT MCCOY!
According to NFL writer John Keim, the Redskins aren’t eager to extend Robert Griffin III’s contract this year. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Robert Griffin III since he returned to his team last week, but perhaps the biggest question here is whether the Redskins are willing to keep Griffin. So far, that doesn’t seem to be part of their immediate plans.
After the Redskins drafted him with the second pick and winning the 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, there were a ton of expectation on what Griffin was able to do on the field and how far he could lead his team. However, Griffin failed to replicate his 2012 success in 2013 season and remained below expectations.
Griffin started the current season with the wrong foot, and on September 14, 2014 was carted off the field with after suffering a dislocated left ankle against the Jacksonville. He returned in Week 9 with a decent performance in the loss to the Vikings. “Decent performance” is okay for McCoy. We expect more from RGIII. We made him the demigod whose brilliance offsets every Redskins weakness.
Do we have a choice?
Washington tried to give backup QB Kirk Cousins a chance to take the starting role after Griffin went out, but he was unable to take advantage of that chance. Third-string quarterback Colt McCoy on the other hand did take advantage of the opportunity, and perhaps he should get more playing time at the end of the year assuming the Redskins get eliminated earlier once again. Despite what happens, Washington’s football betting odds to get to the postseason are too big for a serious consideration at this point.
There have been reports that Griffin doesn’t have the support of teammates. Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson recently made comments backing quarterback Robert Griffin III.
“I just felt it was needed. Silence is sometimes a good thing, but if you have an opinion on a topic or a certain situation, then it needs to be spoken. You have to understand the importance of supporting one another. We’re in this locker room together. We work so hard. We compete and do all them great things. But if everyone’s not on one page, it’s hard to get the benefit of the doubt.” Jackson said.
In an ideal world, Griffin would be leading a genuine Super Bowl run after three seasons in Mike Shanahan’s offense. In the real world, he faces questions unimagined after 2012.
Hog Heaven still believes in RGIII, but he has to get it done.
POST-TAMPA BAY UPDATE: That wasn’t it.
