As old conference rivals collided in an up and down, roller coaster type game in Denver, Colorado. Many were left wondering what the heck happened. The Blue Jackets were able to pull away with a 4-3 win on a David Savard goal with a minute left. Join me after the jump won’t you?
Highlights:
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Good: Cody Goloubef and Brandon Dubinsky
Goloubef has been one of the odder cases this season for the Blue Jackets. A player who has not played in the past two months or so and has actually shown in his time played that he is a pretty damn good defensemen. Last night “Goldbeef” as we like to call him here at good ol’ BS Hockey had two assists to go along with a EV CF% of 58% tops out of all defensemen. While Prout has been having himself a good year, I do believe Goloubef has warranted more time on the ice and not in the press box.
Guess whose back? Back again? Dubinsky’s back, tell a friend. Assistant Captain Brandon Dubinsky had himself a game last night scoring two highly skilled goals and providing his normal possession driving play. EV CF% 56% with the hardest zone starts on the team? I’ll have what he’s having.
The Bad: Curtis McElhinney
I don’t like harping on him too much since he is after all, a back up but McElhinney was one lucky SOB last night. With once again a sub 900 sv% he showed us that goaltending is in fact very hard and only the best should try it. Out of position multiple times he had to make “acrobatic” saves to put himself back into position. This game could have been much easier if his lateral movement wasn’t that of an old geezer. C-Mac did end up with the win though, so I guess, yay?
The Ugly: David Savard
No this isn’t a comment on his bearded face, this is in fact a comment on his play last night. It was U-G-L-Y and it had no alibi. We have talked many times on the site how the “big mistake” often overshadows the process players go through. With three big mistakes last night it is pretty hard to overlook the fact that he almost gave away this game. In addition to his boneheaded mistakes he also had the worst EV CF at 41% among the defensemen. I should also mention he scored the game winning goal, many will tell you he totally redeemed himself but alas they should have never been in the situation to begin with. I do think the media may have had the troll move of the day by voting Savard the number one star of the game.
“Well what do you think guys?”
“He did try helping both teams win.”
“DAVID SAVARD IT IS!”
