I’ve been saying this for years…FO on Insider confirms it
The face of that deal seems lopsided, but remember that the Chargers could have spent their first overall pick in 2004 on someone besides a quarterback. While no one will fault them for taking Rivers, they could’ve opted for Robert Gallery or Larry Fitzgerald, the latter of whom went third overall to the Arizona Cardinals.
That makes the trade much more difficult to swallow. Chargers fans: Would you have swapped Brees and Fitzgerald for Rivers, Merriman and Kaeding?
Given Brees’ slight statistical advantage and the possibility of having arguably the league’s best quarterback (Brees) and wide receiver (Fitzgerald) on the same team, it’s our opinion that Chargers general manager A.J. Smith misplayed his hand. Both Rivers and Brees are fantastic players, but Smith failed to maximize the value of his two assets.
