Popular razor blade company Gillette released an ad a couple weeks ago, which you can watch in the above video player, and the commercial has polarized most of the nation. The ad features the company appearing to comment on and condemn “toxic masculinity”, and encourages men to be the best versions of themselves.
The ad has drawn so much criticism from some people that a boycott of Gillette products has been called for by groups of men and women in the country. Others believe the ad was a necessary call-to-action, and was a brave stance taken by the company who has popularized the promotional phrase “the best a man can get.”
Former WWE Champion AJ Styles recently spoke with political commentator Steven Crowder on his Blaze TV show Louder With Crowder, and during the interview Styles revealed his initial reaction to the Gillette ad.
“When I watched the commercial I was trying to understand who they were talking to,” said Styles, h/t to Pro Wrestling Sheet for the transcription. “I have a wife, and a daughter … and 3 boys … but, I think about my daughter. So I had to find out what this was. What was so toxic. And apparently, from what I’m understanding, it was just … being mean to women?”
A specific moment in the Gillette ad features a male boss at an office conference table putting his arm on a woman’s shoulder while appearing to scold her as a group of male office workers sit around the same table onlooking. Reacting to the ad’s moment, which was likely to remind men that unwanted physical contact in the workspace is not acceptable, Styles said, “well what did she say before?! Maybe he’s sticking up for her? Maybe she did say something that was wrong…
“I didn’t even know about this toxic stuff going on. I’m a man. I’ve got testosterone going through my body. We are different than women. It’s just the way it is and some men will never change.”
