Aledmys Diaz Named As 2016 MLB All-Star

Aledmys Diaz has been added to the National League roster for the 2016 MLB All-Star game after Matt Carpenter was sent to the disabled list earlier today preventing him from participating.

Coach Mike Matheny on his lobbying efforts for Diaz via ESPN.com:

“Especially for a team who hasn’t seen him up close and personal to see how good this kid’s been, we wanted to voice our opinion to see if that could help,” said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny, whose team has yet to play Collins’ New York Mets this season. “I think there is some sort of obligation, having been in that seat before, to have each organization have representation.”

The Cardinals 2016 season hasn’t had many sustainable bright spots. Diaz, however, has been the most pleasant of surprises.

Through Thursday:

  • .319 average (6th in NL)
  • .921 OPS (11th in NL)
  • 90 hits (15th in NL)
  • 44 RBIs (29th in NL)
  • 2.5 WAR (20th in NL)

It’s wasn’t that long ago that the Cardinals were signing Ruben Tejada to add depth at SS since Jhonny Peralta was headed for an extended stay on the DL.

Less than 5 months later and the Cardinals have shifted 50% of their infield to accommodate Diaz and keep him as the everyday SS.

Plays like this are pretty fun, too:

Congratulations to the rookie on this honor.

Well deserved.
