Hello Followers. Happy 2012!
Since many of you have asked, I spent yesterday from 5:15AM until today at 3:05AM driving from the beaches of Miami, Fl back to my bountiful compound in Upstate New York. Mind you, as a part of that 1400 mile glue-sniffing journey, I was able to watch the last 10 minutes of the RB from a wonderful Chili’s in Fredericks, VA and heard most of the Fiesta Bowl on the wadio along the way (and I say “most” because when you’re driving between small media markets, you get about 45% game and 55% static)
Anywho, when I jumped into bed at 4:00am or so, I was able to revisit the evenings happenings via my Twitter feed, when I stumbled upon a tweet from Benedict Bob which revelaed that we might just have hired our new Defensive Coordinator. And he is?
So, if you want to check out a few thoughts on the possible hire of Billy Ray, Jack Bobby Ray White, then read on.
Followers, I have to tell you, when I read the news about BJW, I gave out a loud enough Jim Moore-esque “You’ve got to be F$*king Kidding Me” that I actually woke up (one of the) Mrs. Sutra. I mean, nothing could or should be more underwhelming for a Cougar fan than to read about the hire of someone who has made a living out of doing less with more!
I mean, seriously, did any of you see what Baylor and Clay Bennett State did to Bobby Flay Jay Rob’s defense this past year? What’s more, have any of you seen the University of Clay Bennett outside of the top 5 in Scout’s yearly recruiting rankings EVER? Meaning, since his defense got shredded with five star guys all over the field, what happens when he gets the typical WSU 2.5 star, JC transfer?
But, the more I thought about it, the more that my inner Bill Doba started to speak to me.
And the words said by the ghost of Baggy-Pants Bill were as follows:
“Sutra, remember….: Its not the X’s and O’s, its the Jimmies and Joes.
Now bring me some of that SafeCare medicated powder for that rash of mine, its driving me CRAZY.”
++++
Cuz, truly, if yesterday’s games showed/sounded anything, it is that college offenses are just WAY ahead of college defenses, SEC defenses notwithstanding. So, until such time that DC’s at-large figure out how to stop the different spreads that are out there, the best that can be done is as follows: (a) Recruit the Best Athletes you can into your program; and (b) Maintain consistency in staff and scheme so that your players grow into what you are trying to do.
And truly, hiring Cletis’ second cousin on his mother’s side (and his first on his father’s side) does just that: It brings the potential of a Texas recruiting pipeline into Pullman and provides reasonable assurance that WSU’s defensive staff will remain in tact for Leach’s five years.
And for now, that’s what we have to hang our hats on……(but man would I have liked me a young Mr. Wilcox…)
Okay, that’s it for today. In about an hour, I’ll tune into the Times’ chat with Coach Leach and then later on, I’ll resume my clandestine ventures into finding out whether Christian Caple is actually going to write anything as a part of his new Tenure with the Spokesman.
All for now. Go Cougs.
