Now that we’ve had enough drinks to get us past the confusion of the 16th pick, let’s tell you a little bit about RJ Hunter… another guard.
Actually, before we go too crazy and make Khan/Timberwolves/guards jokes, Hunter (a) isn’t undersized and (b) can shoot, so he breaks the pattern. As you can see from the video, he’s got a quick release and a lot of range. They were even joking on the broadcast about how funny it would be for Hunter to fall all the way to Golden State to give them ANOTHER shooter.
At first blush, Hunter fits better with the Celtics. The rest of the Red’s Army team agrees.
Geoffrey Simpson: Like this pick a lot. Celtics need shooting, and Hunter can really shoot it. Has some upside as a scorer/creator. Will be interesting to see what Brad/Danny does with all these guards
Mike Dynon: Another guard! But Hunter is less of a surprise. Scal was pumped for this pick on the CSNNE draft show, and Sherrod Blakely added that Brad Stevens had recruited Hunter for Butler.
KWAPT: Can always find room for a shooter… *cough* bye Pressey *cough*
Ben Mark: Hunter at that spot is great. Low risk and potentially high reward as a lights out shooter
This pick makes a hell of a lot more sense than 16… but I really think we need to wait to see how the summer shakes out before making a final judgement on that. I think this also puts a little more pressure on James Young to step up, which isn’t bad. That’s not to say they can’t coexist. In fact, if both Young and Hunter reach their full potential, we’re looking at some pretty deadly shooting that you can put on either side of the floor to spread defenses.
