The Angels have themselves a new pitching coach. The team announced the hiring of former All-Star right-hander Charles Nagy early Monday evening, reportedly luring him in on a two-year contract. The longtime Cleveland starter has done well for himself since retiring in 2003, working consistently either as a pitching coach around the league or a special assistant in the Tribe’s front office.
Nagy is not entirely new to the Angels organization. He spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as the org’s Triple-A pitching coach, where he mentored a young Jered Weaver. Most notably, he spent three years (2011-2013) as Arizona’s pitching coach, where he helped Tyler Skaggs through a rookie campaign then was infamously fired from for not having his pitchers headhunt enough. Seriously. The D’Backs pitching was never great from top to bottom when Nagy was in town, but he did oversee career seasons from young arms like Wade Miley, Patrick Corbin, Trevor Cahill, Ian Kennedy, and Daniel Hudson. With a few young-ish guys already in the rotation and several more on the way, Nagy seems to be the perfect guy to replace Mike Butcher, who, coincidentally, is now working for Arizona.
Nagy is likely the first of several hires the Angels will announce this week. Word on the street is that Dave Hansen is expected to be officially named the new hitting coach sometime in the next 72 hours, and there are still two assistant general managers to hire as well. With the winter signing period officially kicking off Friday evening, it’s probably a safe bet all three of those roles will be filled by the end of the week.
