The Story: The Angels have begun interviewing GM candidates.
The Monkey Says: Thus far it sounds as if the only interviews have been with internal hires Matt Klentak and Scott Servais, but the fact that the Angels are starting the process now is a good since there are multiple teams with GM openings and one or two more teams might still fire their current GM. The Angels probably have the least desirable vacancy, so getting a jump on the competition certainly isn’t going to hurt.
The Story: David Freese will rejoin the Angels lineup today.
The Monkey Says: I imagine he’ll be spelled pretty regularly to get Cowart and Kubitza at-bats, at least once the Angels officially fall out of the Wild Card race. So, I’m thinking maybe some time this weekend?
The Story: Jered Weaver knows the Angels are in a “tough spot.”
The Monkey Says: That’s a mighty strong understatement there, Jered. The Angels aren’t in a tough spot, they’re pretty much dead in the water. They’ve got two teams to leapfrog, so it isn’t even as easy as just whooping up on the Rangers in their remaining games against Texas. They basically need to get on another crazy 17-3 streak like they did back in July or they’re toast.
The Story: There is pressure on Trout to step up and carry the Angels.
The Monkey Says: Well, yeah, it would help the Angels and his MVP case but it isn’t as if other guys stepping up wouldn’t be a good thing either. I’m sure Trout would love to have guys like Bautista, Encarnacion and Tulowitzki around to lend a hand so that he doesn’t have to play like a superhuman every single day.
The Story: Do pitchers get a boost from the Angel Stadium rockpile?
The Monkey Says: So we’re in agreement that Jered Weaver should either pitch at home during the daytime or not all then? Right? Right.
The Story: Taylor Ward is impressing in his minor league debut.
The Monkey Says: Shhh, don’t tell anyone. We’re all supposed to live in fear that he’s Jeff Mathis v2.0. Granted, Mathis showed offensive potential in his minor league days, but Ward is showing some decent upside now. He isn’t going to be an offensive force, but the bar for acceptable offense from a catcher is a lot lower.
