The September 16, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including the team’s GM search expanding to seven candidates, Huston Street losing 13 pounds in three days due to flu-like symptoms and more…
The Story: Angels interviewing at least four external candidates
MWAH Says: I guess Billy Eppler isn’t all that special after all. Arte Moreno and his posse aren’t only stopping in New York for interviews, they also plan to sit down with Indians VP of player personnel Ross Atkins, Red Sox assistant GM Mike Hazen, and Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava. I can’t claim to know much of anything about any of those guys, but seeing as how none of them were really on anyone’s “best GM candidates” list, it seems probable that they’d be more willing to jump into a shared power situation with Mike Scioscia.
The Story: Huston Street is sick, dropping weight like crazy
MWAH Says: Street’s lost 13 pounds since Sunday while battling some sort of stomach bug. He claims that the illness, which had him retching in the bullpen Sunday before he came in and caused the rest of us to start retching, had nothing to do with his bad outing. Which, OF COURSE IT DID. If you’re at like 50-60%, health-wise, why would you think that wouldn’t impair your ability to compete against the best athletes in the sport? Dude should’ve let someone else pitch the ninth, especially given that he’d thrown the last two days as well.
The Story: Angels might not pick up David Murphy’s option
MWAH Says: If the front office is wringing its hands over doling out a measly $7 million for a solid platoon player, I can’t imagine the Angels making much of a big splash this winter. Like, if that’s really a huge financial concern despite Chris Iannetta, David Freese, and Matt Joyce coming off the books, then just go over the dang luxury tax already.
The Story: Grant Green nursing a strained Achilles
MWAH Says: Well that explains why Taylor Featherston and his .450 OPS are starting every day. Green isn’t even with the team at the moment, so the club’s only other 2B options right now are Ryan Jackson and a large bag of flour.
The Story: Angels announce Instructional League roster
MWAH Says: Some exciting Halos prospects will be getting some extra work in this fall. Top dogs Sean Newcomb and Chris Ellis won’t take part in the league—they’ve been shut down for the year for precautionary reasons—but other notable players like Cuban signee Roberto Baldoquin and 2015 first-rounder Taylor Ward will be there.
