Halo Headlines: Heaney hits DL with forearm strain; 5K run on Saturday

The April 7, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Andrew Heaney being sidelined indefinitely, the team hosting its annual charity run this weekend, and more…

The Story: Andrew Heaney placed on DL with flexor muscle strain in left forearm

MWAH Says: This one hurts. The team is insisting that nothing is wrong with Heaney’s UCL, meaning that Tommy John isn’t on the table at the moment, but we’ve heard that before. I’ll believe he’s out of the woods when he’s back on the mound in Anaheim and hitting 94 on the gun. As Andrew noted in his Cubs series recap yesterday, the Heaney injury stretches the team’s supposedly deep rotation to its limits. Tropeano will for sure take over for Heaney, but if Shoemaker and/or Weaver now implode as we thought they might, the Halos’ best in-house options then become guys like Nate Smith, Jose Alvarez, Cory Rasmus, and Kyle Kendrick. Tyler Skaggs cannot get back to the rotation quick enough.

The Story: Angels 5K charity run happening this Saturday

MWAH Says: Registration apparently ended at 11:59pm last night, so I hope those of you who planned on attending already signed up. The event kicks off at 8:00am Saturday morning.

The Story: Chad Hinshaw at ease in year 2 with Arkansas Travelers

MWAH Says: Injuries limited the speedy and HBP-prone outfielder to just 79 games in 2015, so he’s getting a second dose of Double-A before pushing ahead to Salt Lake and (hopefully) Anaheim. My favorite Hinshaw stat?: His HBP rate in 1,007 minor-league plate appearances (4.8%) is almost a full percentage point higher than C.J. Cron’s BB rate in 664 big-league plate appearances (4.1%).

The Story: Sam Miller hosted a Reddit AMA

MWAH Says: The former Angels OCR blogger and current Baseball Prospectus editor-in-chief did a fun question and answer on Reddit yesterday morning. If you haven’t read his stuff on Mike Trout, or the feats of Mark Reynolds, or the baseball pit, you definitely should.

The Story: Is A’s reliever Sean Doolittle the most interesting man in baseball?

MWAH Says: I dunno about most interesting, but he does seem like a pretty cool guy at least. Glad he’s healthy again this year. It’s always fun to watch a guy bring the heat 90% of the time and still succeed, even if he’s doing it against the Halos.

The Story: ‘The Arm’ has perfect pitch

MWAH Says: A glowing review of Jeff Passan’s new book about Tommy John surgery and the growing elbow-injury epidemic in baseball. With the unfortuante Heaney news and Skaggs slowly working his way back from TJ, might have to give it a read.
