The March 20th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Richards won’t break camp with team, second base competition still wide open and much more…

The Story: Garrett Richards won’t break camp with the Angels.
The Monkey Says: We knew this, but this is them making sure that everyone knows it. Probably the most important part of this piece is that it does NOT include a quote for Richards, which indicates to me that he is on board with the plan after spending the early part of camp seemingly not wanting to play along.

The Story: The second base competition remains wide open and Matt Lindstrom looks like he will make the roster.
The Monkey Says: We’re only halfway through spring training, so a lot can change, but this is how things are shaking out so far.

The Story: C.J. Cron’s swing looks good early on.
The Monkey Says: The swing has never been the problem, it is what he is swinging at that is the issue. Cron makes a lot of contact and has great power, but he often gets himself out by making contact with pitches that he just can’t do anything with.

The Story: Five teams we may be overrating.
The Monkey Says: This includes the Angels, but it also counts the Mariners, the Angels’ chief competition in the AL West. If they are both overrated, then I think that means the Angels are still better. Excellent!

The Story: Is Mike Trout wise to be more aggressive on the first pitch?
The Monkey Says: It looks at first pitches in the macro, but Trout seems like he could be a micro outlier in that pitchers know he isn’t going to swing at first pitches. He might benefit from being slightly more aggressive simply in that it will keep pitchers honest and force them to make a pitch rather than gifting them a strike.
