The March 4th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Scioscia sorting through second base options, Alex Johnson dies at 72 and much more…

The Story: Mike Scioscia is sorting through his options at second base.
The Monkey Says: Right now Rutledge is operating as the starter, which is no real surprise. Based on these comments here and in previous articles, it sounds highly likely that there will be some sort of timeshare arrangement at second base. It might actually make sense for Scioscia to go with a bat-glove platoon based on who the starting pitcher is. Taylor Featherston projects as the best fielder, so he could start when groundball heavy starters are on the mound and Rutledge or Green could start when flyball pitchers draw the start.

The Story: Former batting champion Alex Johnson passed away at age 72.
The Monkey Says: He won that title as an Angel in 1970, which was one of the franchise highpoints at the time.

The Story: Huston Street offers a reliever’s perspective on the pace-of-play rule changes.
The Monkey Says: I can see how that clock might mess with a reliever’s routine, but it also seems like something they’d be able to adapt to over time. The only real threat will be relievers getting warmed up prematurely to make sure they are ready if needed and then ultimately not be needed. That puts a tax on a guy’s arm, but it isn’t a major one.

The Story: Matt Shoemaker is the key player for the Angels in the AL West race.
The Monkey Says: Maybe. I really just think they need someone to be a quality #2 behind Richards. That could be Shoemaker. That could be Andrew Heaney. That could be a resurgent Weaver or Wilson. Or it could be no one and the Halos would be screwed.

The Story: Velocity is not Mike Trout’s problem.
The Monkey Says: No, location is.
