The April 23rd, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Shoemaker placed on bereavement leave, Wilson dealing with elbow stiffness and much more…

The Story: Matt Shoemaker was placed on bereavement leave and Nick Tropeano called up to take his spot on the roster.
The Monkey Says: Shoemaker’s grandfather passed away. Condolences.

The Story: C.J. Wilson will have his start pushed back to Saturday due to elbow stiffness.
The Monkey Says: The team says it is nothing serious, but still, elbow issues are never a good thing. Nick Tropeano will start in his place on Thursday with Wilson slotting into Shoemaker’s vacated slot on Saturday. Shoemaker is penciled in to return Wednesday, but it seems likely that the team will juggle the rotation again later so that Wilson and Santiago don’t continue to start back-to-back. If you’re wondering why Tropeano got the nod over Heaney, it is because Heaney pitched Monday and would thus not be on full rest.

The Story: There is no change in the contract extension talks for Huston Street.
The Monkey Says: There’s no real rush to get it done, especially if the Angels are willing to slap Street with a qualifying offer. The Hamilton contract situation could be delaying this, assuming the Angels actually want to get it done.

The Story: Mike Scioscia attempts to clarify the inflammatory comments from Angels management regarding Josh Hamilton.
The Monkey Says: Scioscia would have us believe that their “defies logic” commentary was expressly about the interpretation of the Joint Drug Agreement not at least mandating Hamilton get treatment and did not have anything to do with Josh personally. OK, if he says so.

The Story: The Angels claimed outfielder Gary Brown off waivers and assigned him to Triple-A.
The Monkey Says: A former top prospect with elite speed and not much else, Brown could be a pinch-running specialist when rosters expand in September and the left off the playoff roster in favor of a superfluous reliever. Cory Rasmus was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man for Brown. That actually pushes his potential return into June rather than mid-May as originally projected.

The Story: Statcast looks at the speed of Mike Trout, Dee Gordon and Billy Hamilton.
The Monkey Says: They are all very, very fast.

The Story: Matt Shoemaker is not one to look back.
The Monkey Says: I wonder how much longer the “he came from nowhere” story is going to define Shoemaker and when he’ll just be looked at as another pretty good pitcher?

The Story: The All-25 and under team.
The Monkey Says: Guess who plays center field for this team. I dare you.

The Story: A look at velocity and how it relates to pitcher injuries.
The Monkey Says: Tyler Skaggs get mentioned in here as a guy who spiked in velocity and then saw his elbow give out. There is no firm conclusion to the piece, but I think we are safe in assuming that Jered Weaver should be just fine.
