The Story: Huston Street has Grade 1 groin strain
MWAH Says: On the muscle tear scale, a Grade 1 is about the best news one can get—it means less than 5% of the muscle fiber is damaged. Considering how much agony Street seemed to be in Saturday afternoon, that he could return some time in the postseason seems a small miracle. That’s getting a little ahead of things, though. Street is definitely out of commissionf for the regular season, meaning the Angels are going to have to go the closer-by-committee route for the critical final week.
The Story: Matt Shoemaker still dealing with forearm soreness
MWAH Says: Nick Tropeano will likely start in Shoemaker’s stead yet again on Tuesday, making it four times in the last month he’s filled in for the Cobbler. Any kind of arm issue is worrying for a pitcher, but forearm strains can be especially pesky and often seem to evolve into UCL problems. Let’s hope that’s not the case here.
The Story: Jered Weaver pulled early due to shoulder tightness
MWAH Says: Weaver said his shoulder never felt right on Sudnay, which explains why Scioscia yanked him after just 71 pitches with a short bullpen on hand. Weaver also said this is something he’s been dealing with for years and that he expects to make his next start, but maybe he shouldn’t? The idea of Weaver starting a must-win game on the road in Arlington does not inspire confidence.
The Story: Joe Smith making progress, will throw off mound soon
MWAH Says: Smith threw off an incline on Sunday is expected to toss a few from a mound in the coming days. I don’t want to say the Angels’ playoff hopes hinge on Smith making it back to the team in Texas, but man does it feel that way. The bullpen has hung on so far, but I don’t know if they can hold up for another week if they continue to throw so many innings.
The Story: Angels looking in and out of organization for relief help
MWAH Says: No real surprise given the first four news items today, though there really doesn’t seem to be any point to looking outside the organization at this point. Adding any sort of impact for a week’s worth of games is silly, and bringing in a guy just to eat innings even more so. Whoever they decide to have join the mix will likely throw five innings tops, so they may as well use someone like Drew Rucinski or Vinnie Pestano.
The Story: Halos went 5-0 while Pope Francis was in the U.S.
MWAH Says: The Angels are going to have to bottle whatever kind of good juju he brought the team while in country, because he’s leaving on Pope Force One today.
