The July 28th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Victorino trade reactions, Weaver to make rehab start on Thursday and much more…
The Story: Bill Stoneman talks about the Shane Victorino trade.
The Monkey Says: The most important things that Stoneman says here are that the team is still looking for more help and will consider a more full-time candidate in left field as well as a left-handed complement to Victorino. Also worth noting is that the Red Sox are covering $3.8 million of the $4.9 million still owed to Victorino.
The Story: Shane Victorino is used but still functional.
The Monkey Says: Now it is just a matter of using him in the right functions. Victorino should only face left-handed pitching, but as a “gritty veteran,” it is easy to see how Scioscia could become enamored of him and turn him into a regular should they not acquire a suitable platoon mate.
The Story: Jered Weaver will pitch in a rehab game for the Inland Empire 66ers on Thursday.
The Monkey Says: He finally starts moving forward, but this is a game that will have to be closely watched as Jered has seemingly plateaued in his recovery.
The Story: The Angels are one of many teams interested in Ben Zobrist.
The Monkey Says: But so are a lot of teams with better farm systems and bigger needs. This one doesn’t look good.
The Story: Joel Sherman unearths the C.J. Wilson-Andre Ethier trade idea.
The Monkey Says: This trade still doesn’t strike me as the kind of good fit a lot of others appear to think. There also doesn’t appear to be any credible reports that the Angels and Dodgers have even discussed such a swap.
The Story: Hector Santiago applied structure and a little black notebook to his life to achieve success this season.
The Monkey Says: Whatever works for you. Honestly, it is so great to see what can happen when an athlete finally realizes that they need to develop a work ethic rather than just rely on talent.
The Story: Five deadline deals that make sense, including Carlos Gomez to the Angels.
The Monkey Says: Yeah, no. Nothing against Carlos Gomez, but a lot of his value comes from his superlative center field defense and last time I checked, the Angels had center field covered. His bat would help the offense, but his glove would be a bit wasted in left. I also don’t think Gomez is exactly the sort of gent that would cotton to moving to a corner outfield spot.
The Story: Mike Trout passed Tim Salmon and Bobby Grich on the all-time Angels fWAR list.
The Monkey Says: He could pass Brian Downing any day now and then the only position player he will have left in front of him will be Jim Fregosi, who he should pass some time before the All-Star break of next season.
The Story: Baseball’s best relievers visualized.
The Monkey Says: To think, I once thought that Dipoto mildly overpaid Joe Smith.
