The March 13th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including worrying about Weaver’s velocity, Ferrell plays with the Angels and much more…

The Story: Folks are worrying about Jered Weaver’s velocity in Spring Training.
The Monkey Says: Weaver topped out at 85 MPH in his last start. That’s not good, but it is also early in Spring Training, so he might still be building arm strength and/or not going 100% in order to focus more on mechanics. We saw Weaver spike his velocity towards the end of last season, so I find it hard to believe he lost a big chunk in the offseason. This will obviously become a story now, but I wouldn’t start to panic until we see him on Opening Day.

The Story: Will Ferrell actually made a play during his inning playing for the Angels.
The Monkey Says: Look at that crow hop! As overhyped as this whole stunt was, I have to admit, I couldn’t help but check it out.

The Story: Matt Joyce was a late scratch from yesterday’s game.
The Monkey Says: Relax, it was a hamstring issue, not his ribs. He’s expected to play today.

The Story: David Freese looks better in the field this spring.
The Monkey Says: The slimmed down physique is helping him, according to the coaching staff. Then again, this is the time of year in which coaches are praising everyone for everything, so this doesn’t mean all that much.

The Story: The difficulty of squaring up Garrett Richards.
The Monkey Says: This says a lot about how much his velocity means to him, so let’s hope that he didn’t lose anything due to his knee injury.

The Story: Matt Shoemaker is a Cy Young sleeper candidate.
The Monkey Says: I don’t think he’s quite that good, but some flukey BABIP and HR/FB rates could certainly make him look special for a season.

The Story: The most volatile starting rotations.
The Monkey Says: I was terrified to look a this, but it turns out that the Angels are in the middle of the pack. OK, the bottom of the middle of the pack. It seems a lot of that comes from the stability that Weaver provides, so let’s hope that this velocity thing turns out to be much ado about nothing.

The Story: Memory of his father gives Efren Navarro perspective.
The Monkey Says: This has been your daily “player derives motivation for his father” spring training story.
