Salt Lake Bees
The Good: Mark Trumbo hit his third home run on the season. Rich Thompson pitched four scoreless innings of relief on Sunday, fanning five while giving up just one hit and one walk. Terry Evans (.333) hit a ninth inning home run off former Expos/Nationals closer Chad Cordero on Sunday. Evans also had two walks and two runs scored. Michael Ryan homered for the first time of the season with a walk off three run homer to give the Bees their first win at home on the 2010 season.
The Bad: Trevor Reckling got lit up on Sunday, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in just three innings of work.
The Noteworthy: The Bees outfield is always crowded so Gorneault’s days with Salt Lake may be numbered. Nick Gorneault (.50) is off to a slow start, going 1-20 out of the gate with eight strikeouts.
Arkansas Travelers
The Good: Michael Kohn fanned three in a scoreless inning of work in Sunday’s loss to the Frisco Roughriders. Brian Walker (.400) continues to hit for the Travs, went 2-4 on Saturday. Ryan Mount broke up a no-hitter by Frisco’s Blake Beaven with a double on Sunday.
The Bad: The Travelers continue to have trouble scoring runs. They are second to last in team batting average (.213) and slugging pct (.305) in the Texas League after Sunday’s loss. 2B Ryan Mount committed two errors on Sunday. He has four errors on the season.
The Noteworthy: The stud relievers: Michael Kohn, Jordan Walden and Ryan Aldridge have combined to post a 0.00 ERA in 11 innings of work, striking out 23.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
The Good: Gabe Jacobo has hit in nine of his ten games played, including five multi-hit contests, a trend that continued over the weekend. Roberto Lopez went 2-3 on Saturday and drove in three runs. Ryan Kiniry went 3-4 with two stolen bases on Saturday. Tyson Auer went 2-4 with a home run out of the leadoff spot on Saturday. Andrew Taylor (2.84) pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday, fanning two. Alexi Amarista went 2-4 out of the leadoff spot on Sunday. Alexi is hitting .333 early on. Reliever Jose Perez pitched two scoreless, hitless innings on Sunday, striking out three.
The Bad: Manual Flores (6 IP, 5, 1 K) and Manaurys Correa (6 IP, 4 ER, 0 K’s) both failed to earn a quality start on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Both failed to miss many bats, but held their own in Lancaster’s launching pad of a stadium. 2009 Pioneer League stud (.372 BA) Dillon Baird is off to a slow start, went 0-4 on Sunday, dropping his batting average to .205.
The Noteworthy: Gabe Jacobo leads the Quakes in Batting Average (.359), Slugging Pct. (.590), Home Runs (2) and RBI’s (11).
Cedar Rapids Kernels
The Good: Mike Trout is on FIRE. Saturday he went 1-3 but with two walks and a stolen base (3). On Sunday, Trout clubbed another triple (2) and stole his fourth base on the season after going 2-4. Trout is leading the team in batting average with a .372 line, but what is more impressive is his .471 OBP (8 walks, 6 strikeouts). Trout may be in Rancho Cucamonga before mid-season if he keeps this up. Grichuk busted out on Saturday going 3-6 with three RBI’s and a double. He also stole his 2nd base of the season. Garret Richards (1.10 ERA) went five innings and 1/3 on Sunday, giving up one run on just three hits, but he walks five. Richards did fan eight batters, improving his strikeouts to innings pitched ratio (20 K’s in 16.1 IP). Kyle Hurst won his 2nd game of the season, relieving Tyler Kehrer on Saturday by pitching 3 1/3 innings of no hit, no run ball.
The Bad: Jon Bachanov gave up his first runs of the season on Saturday, giving up two runs on four hits in 2 innings of work. Jean Segura (.300) who topped our AngelsWin.com Prospect Hotlist last Friday went 0-4 with three strikeouts on Sunday.
The Noteworthy: Kernels 1B Eric Oliver (.333) has a 6:1 walks to strikeouts ratio at the plate. The Kernels and Cougars (Oakland A’s Low-A affiliate) wrap up their three game series Monday at noon.
