The Wisconsin State Journal’s Tom Oates reported Sunday that Dave Bush was the early consensus for the #5 starter spot, and that Chris Capuano was headed to the bullpen until Yovani Gallardo got injured. Oates also confirmed that Carlos Villanueva was the front-runner for the #4 spot in the rotation…now likely to be the #3 guy until Gallardo is healthy.
If Bush moves up to #4, then the rotation right now would be Sheets, Suppan, Villanueva, Bush, and either Capuano, Vargas, or Parra. Oates is also a fan of giving Parra a shot at the starting rotation…but it might be a moot point. If Gallardo can indeed throw off a mound again a month from today–on 3/18–he might actually be able to get in a few Cactus League starts and be ready by mid-April. The Brewers don’t need a 5th starter until 4/19 at Cincinnati, so a four man rotation of Sheets, Suppan, Villanueva, and Bush might suffice…provided all do well enough in Maryvale.
