From time to time, baseball can be insanely frustrating and as our buddy Dan Glickman points out, baseball can sometimes even (gasp!) cause its fans to swear.
True story. Just ask your most diehard Chicago Cubs fan or anyone from Boston who routinely gives opposing players the middle name of “F*cking”.
Baseball is also about statistics and, thankfully, that’s where this beautiful chart comes in. Reddit user Niehaus has combed the subreddits of all the Major League teams and broke down what fanbase swears the most and, naturally, who is, by comparison, most polite. His criteria? Funny you should ask.
“To get at swearing frequencies, I took the raw data (including “the”, “and”, etc.), totaled all the words, and then added up all instances of swearing,” Niehaus writes. “Each category of swearing had several words that made it up, as the raw data does not differentiate between plural and singular forms. Common prefixes and suffixes were added. For instance, motherfuckers show up in the fuck category. The non-American category includes such words as twat, bugger, wanker, bastard, arse, arsehole, and shite. Genetalia includes cock, cunt, pussy, dickhead, tits, and cocksucker.”
Makes sense, right?
Topping the list as the most vulgar…fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox. And the least likely to swear (we’ll call them “most polite”), the fanbase of the Milwaukee Brewers…followed closely by fans from the Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins.
While the list makes no mention of who is baseball’s “best” fans…fans of the St. Louis Cardinals ranked near the top as the fifth most vulgar. So there’s that.
