Are Vikings Fans Ready for Yet Another Letdown?

Are Viking fans ready for yet another letdown?

I can remember the exact day that I became a Minnesota Vikings fan December 14th 1980. Vikings vs the Browns, 14 seconds left in the game. Me on the floor glued to the black and white television and my dad with his kitchen towel in his hand twisting and squeezing it as it was a voodoo doll.

Tommy Kramer back to pass, hits a wide receiver who hook and ladders it to Ted Brown who then gets out of bounds. 5 seconds left, again Tommy Kramer back to pass who launches it to the right sidelines towards the end zone where Ahmad Rashad comes up with the ball and backs in to the end zone for the Vikings win and the NFC Central Championship! My dad is jumping up and down and screaming he caught it he caught it! I was hooked.

Let’s fast forward 35 some odd years later going through the ups and down of Minnesota Vikings football and now watching with my 11 year old son who can’t remember the “this is not Detroit!” game vs the Saints in ’09 or the Joe Webb debacle in 2012 against the Packers.

January 10, 2016 a frozen TCF stadium against the Seahawks in a Wildcard game. A 27 yard field goal try to win the game against the highly favored hawks. Here comes Blair Wash who has pretty much kept us in the game all day. “Snap GOOD…Spot Down…Walsh’s Kick Is up and It Is No GOOD… He MISSED IT!” I heard Paul Allen say. I look at my son and all I see is tears. As I have heard my dad tell me many times, I told him “there is always next year.”

2016 is our year! AP is saying that the Vikings can win the Super Bowl. The Vikings get grades of A’s and B’s for the draft and off season moves.

Vikings have a great mix of young guys and veterans to make this team dangerous. Wobby is still looking for that one loss in the 2016 season. Hell I think PA went through every seat in the beautiful US Bank stadium to find that one loss.

As much as I love the Minnesota Vikings and all the hype that goes with it when there is no NFL Football in the off season it brings me back to the Pre 1999 season. Randle Cunningham comes back as QB and we have the rookie of the year in Randy Moss starting his 2nd season. All hopes look great again for a Super Bowl push. Well after a 2-4 start we look to Jeff George (remember him) who went on an 8-2 tear but to get destroyed 49-37 in the divisional round to the eventual Super bowl champions St Louis Rams.

Or how about the 2010 season, the pieces are in place. The Calvary was sent down to Hattiesburg Mississippi to get the Silver Fox! Again we have a rookie of the year Percy Harvin coming into his second year and looking good. Seems as if all is good until we hear that Brett sent a not so amusing pic to a not so thrilled young lady who worked for the Jets during his time there. Well it all went downhill from there.

I do bleed the purple and I love Mike Zimmer and what he has done for our purple and let’s hope for an amazing fun filled 2016 Super Bowl run but I’m just saying as a fan I’m always ready for that call from my dad saying at the end of the season saying “there is always next year”.
