It may have took over 4 hours but the Angels put away the Boston Red Sox in 12 innings yesterday at the “Big A” 5-4. Jeff Mathis was the hero of the day with the walk off hit, but also taking control defensively in the top of the 12th recording the 3rd out on a squib hit by David Ortiz. It was one of those plays we’ve seen too many times already this season where one of the Angels pitchers has zinged the ball into RF and cost the Angels the game. Mathis’ offense is much improved so far this season hitting a robust .524 with runners on and .438 with runners is scoring position.
Ervin Santana had a successful return to the team pitching 5 solid innings giving up 3 runs. And Torii Hunter made yet another dramatic game saving catch, robbing Dustin Pedroia of extra bases, keeping the game tied in the 10th inning.
The Angels seem to be closing in on a minor league deal with reliever Rudy Seanez. The 40 year old won a World Series with the Phillies last year and impressed Mike Scioscia this morning.
Bill Shaikin also reports Vladimir Guerrero will take live batting practice today in Texas. If all goes well it’s possible he could return as the DH in 10-14 days.
Bobby Abreu still has a zero in the home run column for 2009, but Mickey Hatcher says the home runs will come. Abreu has still been productive despite not having taken the tour yet this year. And remember fans it could always be worse, we could have David Ortiz…
Steve Bisheff pleads the case for Brandon Wood joining the Angels. It’s hard to argue with as Wood’s numbers have been down right sick, .351/.439/.877 OPS 1.316 with eight home runs in 57 at-bats for the Bees.
