I think it’s pretty sad how the negotiations with Jason Bay ended up going…that he is going to be wearing a different team’s jersey next year…especially since for the most part, Jason really wanted to come back and the Sox really wanted him back.
So, in my mind…this is how the drama unfolded…between Jason and his agent Joe Urbon.
Jason: So, how is everything going? An offer of 4/60 from the Sox? I like the Sox…gimmicky willikers, I do. I wanna be on a team that gives daily nuggies to Pedey….think we can get more money from them? The Giants offered more..and the Mets.
Joe: Don’t you worry…we’ll have those Red Sox eating out of our hands. Just you wait.
Jason: Gosh Louise…how? Should we send them a nice, ol’ bagel basket?
Joe: Oh Jason…you innocent Canuck. We’re going to play something called hardball. Remember when you were in high school and you really liked this girl…and thought she might like you, but she was playing hard to get?
Jason: Yeah. What’s that got to do with baseball, eh?
Joe: Well, if you told that girl…that you didn’t really like her and were more interested in going to the prom with another girl…what happened?
Jason: I…uhh….
Joe: Jason…come on…that girl you liked came around…went to the prom with you and offered you even more than you asked for…if you know what I mean. *wink wink*
Jason: But what if it doesn’t work…and you end up going to the prom with your second cousin? What if…
Joe: Stop worrying. Never gonna happen.
PRESS CONFERENCE: Joe Urbon says some lovely stuff about how the Red Sox don’t value JayBay for what he’s worth. He says some stuff about how JayBay is seriously considering other offers. He says that JayBay is prepared to move on to other teams at this point.
PRESS CONFERENCE: Red Sox announce they have signed John Lackey and Mike Cameron.
Joe Urbon call to Jason Bay: Umm, Jason?
Jason: Yeah??
Joe: So, be prepared to go to the prom with your second cousin….
Jason: Wahhh…. Come on…no one *really* wants to play for the Mets. Gosh willickers.
END SCENE
In my mind…that is how this Jason Bay debackle went down. No one can convince me it went any differently.
