And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. The Redskins are either pressuring TE Fred Davis off the team, or they are delivering negative motivation to shape up.
Hog Heaven suspects the latter, but who knows.
Word hit the Twitterverse yesterday that Davis is on the trading block. The NFL 2013 trade deadline is October 29, next week.
Mike Shanahan put Albert Haynesworth through humiliating, public conditioning drills in an unsuccessful effort to get Fat Al to shape up. The humiliation rubbed off on Coach Mike and on the team. The Redskins the laughing stock of 2010 before the world moved on to Mark Sanchez and the Jets.
There have been whispers that the coaches were not happy with Davis' practice habits and attentiveness at team meetings. Davis said today on 106.7 The Fan's Lavar Arrington Show that he has not spoken to Shanahan in four weeks. I think he meant that the other way around.
How could Shanahan have passed up to opportunity to run Davis on wind sprints alone in front of all those people at the Bon Secours Redskins Training Camp? (That's sarcasm for the clueless.)
Davis has been irrelevant to the Redskins offense of late. He has three receptions (out of seven targets) on the season. Rookie tight end Jordan Reed ranks second on the team in receptions after catching 26 of the 30 balls thrown to him during the Bears game.
Reed was injured when the Redskins drafted him. Trading Davis before Reed has endured a complete season strikes us as premature for a team that makes roster room for Rex Grossman.
Davis is operating on a one-year, $3.5 million contract. The deal carries a cap hit of $2.5 million, the amount of his base salary and signing bonus.

The Redskins deactivated Davis for the Bears game to make room for newly signed special teamers Josh Hull and Trenton Robinson, more proof that Shanahan is stone cold.
By publicly shopping Davis, the team brings home to him the issues he will face when he enters the 2014 free agent market..
He could be suspended for a year with his next substance abuse violation. He has missed games due to injury. He is not Jimmy Graham who is also in the last year of his contract. The Saints are working a lot harder to re-sign Graham than the Redskins are to keep Davis.
Grief delivered to a star player sends a message to the rest of the team. BOOM!
Nobody loves you like the team that drafted you. Davis got an inkling of that when he spoke to other teams during the offseason.
I'm guessing that Davis will be on the roster and deactive on November 1.
