Even with Saturday evening’s win over the Nationals, the Brewers crossed over into the last fourth of their season still below .500 at 60-62. Victories on Sunday and Monday over the Nationals will return the team to the .500 mark, but, even that will probably be too little, too late.
You see, the Cardinals sit at 71-54, 9½ games ahead of the Crew, and 8 ahead in the loss column. Between the Cards and the Brewers sit the Cubs at 61-60 and the Astros at 61-62.
The one redeeming factor in all this…the Brewers still have 9 games against the Cardinals, as well as 7 against the Cubs and 3 more against the Astros…while the Cardinals still have 3 against the Cubs and 6 against the Astros.
It seems that many fans have written off the Brewers and moved onto the Packers and Badgers and staring at the numbers it is easy to see why–if the Cards play .500 ball the rest of the way, they’ll finish with 89 wins…meaning the Crew will need to go 29-11 from here on out just to tie St. Louis. Still, with the September call-ups, injuries, and players simply wearing down or entering a slump, anything can happen still.
