Penn State’s Beaver Stadium may not get much love from the Ted Mosby’s of the world, but the total package that comes with the old erector set stadium has its charm that is respected across the country. Beaver Stadium was ranked among the top ten college football stadiums in the country by a recent panel effort organized by Athlon Sports.
Beaver Stadium rounded out the top ten in the panel vote. LSU’s Tiger Stadium came out on top, followed by Ohio State’s Ohio Stadium. Ohio Stadium was also ranked the top stadium in the Big Ten by a separate panel put together by Athlon Sports a few weeks ago. Beaver Stadium finished fourth in that poll, behind Nebraska and Wisconsin. Neither the Huskers nor the Badgers appeared in the top ten of this particular panel vote, which expanded the focus of the panel’s makeup to a more national level. So perhaps Beaver Stadium and the environment surrounding it carries more national respect than what is found within the Big Ten footprint.
On the more recent national list, Beaver Stadium appeared on seven out of 15 ballots. It narrowly edged UCLA’s Rose Bowl Stadium home by one point for the final spot in the top ten. The Rose Bowl is tremendous of course, and if it was based purely on its overall history rather than just UCLA home games, the Rose Bowl would have been much more deserving of higher praise.
Michigan Stadium received 28 points, Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium received 23 votes and Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium received 13 votes.
In the interest of full disclosure, I voted in both Athlon Sports polls mentioned. Just the other day NFL.com ranked Penn State’s uniforms the best in the country for 2014.
