Atlanta Braves fire Fredi Gonzalez

The first manager change of the year is here. To the surprise of virtually nobody, it comes in Atlanta. The Braves have fired Fredi Gonzalez after stumbling out to a woeful 9-28 record this season.

Gonzalez was hired by Atlanta prior to the 2011 season after being canned midway through the 2-1- season by the Marlins the previous summer. Gonzalez led the Braves to three straight winning seasons from 2011 through 2013, winning 94 and 96 game sin 2012 and 2013, respectively. Things only got worse from there though as the Braves went back-to-back seasons with a losing record and are already 19 games under the .500 mark the year before moving into a new baseball stadium.

There are a number of reasons why things have not been going well in Atlanta, with Gonzalez only a part of the problem, but as is typically the case, Gonzalez’s time had run out.

The Braves have named triple-A manager Brian Snitker the interim manager for the remainder of the 2016 season. This is his first job on a major league job as a manager. Of course, we kindly offer the Braves a recommendation for their next manager…

Meanwhile, your Philadelphia Phillies look to shake off a two-game losing streak tonight as they continue their home series with the Marlins. With the loss last night, the Phillies fell half a game farther back behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East (now 1.5 games back, two games back in the loss column) and are now tied with the New York Mets for second place in the NL East. The Mets and Phillies are currently tied for the top two wild card spot sin the National League, because it is never too early to keep track of this stuff.
