I hate to say it, but It appears that boxing is taking a brief hiatus from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for a couple of weeks. Though, that is not to say that there isn’t news coming out of the boxing scene just to the south of us.
Brian Vera Destroys Sebastien Demers in Montreal
Austin based Brian Vera, a former participant on the boxing reality show “The Contender,” scored an impressive third round knockout of former IBF middleweight title contender Sebastien Demers. The fight was the co-featured fight on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” card from the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada.
After some nip and tuck action through the first two rounds, Vera unleashed hell in the third. Vera dropped Demers early into the round with a perfect combination. Demers was cut, but gamely rose to his feet. Vera, smelling blood, jumped on his injured opponent and dropped Demers twice more before the referee halted the contest at 1:57 in the round.
With the win Vera improves his record to 17-4, 11 KOs; Demers falls to 31-3, 11 KOs in defeat.
James Kirkland Plans to Resume Career Upon Release
Austin junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (25-0, 22 KOs) has confirmed through his co-manager Cameron Dunkin to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael. Kirkland has been locked up in a Texas prison since April 2009 after he pled guilty to gun possession by a convicted felon. According to the report, Kirkland is slated to be released to a halfway house on October 2 with a return to the ring a few months later.
Prior to his arrest, Kirkland was wildly considered a sure-fire title contender. Trained by Ann Wolfe, Kirkland fought with an aggression that illustrated his hard-knock upbringing on the streets of east Austin. Kirkland last fought in March of 2009, stopping Joel Julio in six rounds.
