After dropping games to Clemson and Mississippi State, Auburn almost fell to 0-3 on the third weekend of the season. ULM was coming off of a shocking upset of Arkansas and was more than game today in this match-up. ULM jumped out in front after a 12 play 89 yard six minute drive. That kind of drive meant that it was going to be a long day for Auburn.
Tied at 14 after a trick play TD pass from Quan Bray to QB Kiehl Frazier, Auburn completed a 33 yard hail mary to end the half up seven points. Quickly in the third, Tre Mason added a TD and Auburn had a 14 point lead and looked like it was in control. Not so fast. Kolton Browning and ULM came from behind in the fourth quarter to score on two drives to tie up the game. On the final drive of regulation, Auburn’s defense had some key blunders including a critical off-sides on a fourth down and a pass interference on the next play. ULM made some great plays during that drive but the Auburn defense also contributed in a major way to the Warhawks tying the score.
In overtime the difference was the kicking game. ULM shanked their FG after deciding to kick it on fourth and five and Auburn kneeled down to set up a FG that they made for the game winner. Make fun of Auburn all you want, and I did on Twitter, but at least they escaped with a victory.
That being said, this Auburn team is an absolute mess. They can’t run the ball up the middle, they have a QB who doesn’t fit their system and isn’t ready to play college football at this level and their defense is having too many mental miscues in Brian Van Gorder’s first season at the helm. Auburn needed a trick play, a hail mary and a missed field goal to beat ULM. Chew on that for a minute. Also, chew on the fact that the 1-2 Auburn Tigers next two games are against LSU and Arkansas. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.
