Back-to-back days on the countdown, and back-to-back days spent talking the tight end position as well! Considering the lack of experience at wide receiver, there could be a lot of leaning on a surprisingly stocked position group. That’s right, we’re just 84 days…err, Austin Maly, away from the start of Badger football for the 2014 season.
Coming in to the spring, head coach Gary Andersen and crew were not sure what they had at at the group. However, after spring ball was complete, Andersen made specific mention of the depth that exists at the position.
Will our subject of the countdown be a part of that depth chart? Let’s find out.
Maly’s Story So Far:
– Redshirt junior for Madison-area Waunakee, Wis. has yet to record a single catch in his career as a Badger.
– Was the No. 5-ranked player in the state of Wisconsin coming out of high school.
What to Expect in 2014:
Maly appears to be one of the players deep on the depth chart, as he hasn’t been able to record a single stat of any kind in his previous two years at UW. He enters a crucial junior year, where gaining some appearances will be necessary if he wants to have a shot next season of being at or near the top of the depth chart. Look for this fall camp to be hugely important to his chances of making that happen. However, with the likes of Same Arneson, Troy Fumagalli and Austin Traylor being singled out this spring as to performers at the position, it will be an uphill battle for him to see playing time.
