I would not have been happy had he gone.
Absentee honoree
The New England Patriots honored their 50th anniversary team Monday night at Gillette Stadium. Adam Vinatieri was included as the place-kicker but enjoyed the festivities from afar.
Patriots owner Bob Kraft personally called the Colts kicker with an invitation, assuring him he would make the necessary travel arrangements so Vinatieri wouldn’t miss any of his current responsibilities.
“I respectfully declined,” Vinatieri said. “I told him I was honored and it was cool, but I couldn’t do that.”
Vinatieri didn’t bother asking Colts management if it would have a problem with him attending the New England event.
“It just wouldn’t have been right,” he said.
It was mentioned Vinatieri could have worn his Colts jersey during the Patriots’ halftime ceremony.
“They probably never would have let me out of the parking lot if I did that,” he said with a laugh.
