The name Chris Chelios brings smiles to millions of American hockey fans and if you talk to anyone that was around when he donned the cardinal and white sweater you're libel to find a smile staring back at you. Chelios was named to the University of Wisconsin Hall of Fame in 2011 and now he's got a much bigger honor in front of him.
On Tuesday the Hockey Hall of Fame announced their 2013 class and Chelios' name was called to be a member. He will join a class that is headlined by fellow big names like Brendan Shanahan and Scott Niedermayer. In total those three NHL stars, one woman, and a coach will be going into the Hall of Fame.
Chelios was able to lift an NCAA Championship trophy in the 1982-83 season and while he only played two seasons in a Badger sweater he was able to amass 22 goals and 75 assists as a defenseman. He was named to the WCHA's Top 50 players in 50 years list in the 2001-02 season.
In the NHL the man was a straight up star, winning three Stanley Cup championships (Montreal, 1985-86; Detroit, 2001-02 & 2007-08) and being named an all-star eleven times in his career. He also won the Norris Trophy three times, given to the leagues best defensive player. He is the all-time leader in games played in the NHL by an American and a defenseman.
He also represented his country in four Olympic Games, playing for the United States in 1984, 1998, 2002 and 2006 – captaining the last three squads.
The five person class will officially be inducted in a ceremony this November.
