Badger Hockey to Celebrate 50 years in the Modern Era

During the 2012-13 season, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team will celebrate 50 years in the modern era of Badger hockey.

The team will commemorate this milestone and pay tribute to its rich heritage by wearing a patch (pictured above) on their uniforms during the year.

The six stars on the patch pay homage to each of Wisconsin’s six national championships.

As part of the year-long celebration, honorary captains will take part in special ceremonies, including an honorary puck drop, before all 19 home games .

Former Wisconsin defenseman Chris Chelios is reported to be among the honorary captains, a full list of the captains is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

As previously announced, the ice at the Kohl Center will be dedicated to Bob Johnson at the home opener on Nov. 2.

This season also marks a number of other important anniversaries in hockey history. It is the 40^th anniversary of the program’s first NCAA Championship, that team will be honored on Jan. 25 when then Badgers play host to Alaska Anchorage.

2013 will also mark 30 seasons since the school’s fourth national title. The 1983 squad will be honored during the Feb. 8 game against Bemidji State.
