Badgers 2014 football camp primer

Marcus Kelly (NR, DE; Waukesha, WI): Kelly currently has no offers to his name at any level, but he is drawing interest from the likes of UW along with Minnesota, Iowa State and a bunch of #MACtion schools. He is a 6’4″, 230-pound strong-side defensive end, but that size could also be a mismatch as an outside linebacker in the Badgers system. The one thing he has going in his favor is a motor and attacking style of play. With the Badgers pretty loaded on the defensive line it will take a great camp for Kelly to earn an offer most likely, but it’s not impossible by any stretch.

Antonio Shenault (3-star, CB; Roselle, IL): Another interesting prospect, and one that already has offers from fellow “Power 5” conference schools Minnesota and Iowa State. However, the Badgers already have two commitments in the 2015 class at that position and also have offers out to targets much higher on the board than Shenault. With over 40 offers to cornerbacks, it could be a case of just a numbers game for Shenault unless he blows the coaching staff away at camp.

Justin Tranquill (3-star, WR; Fort Wayne, IN): Tranquill, the brother of Dru, is looking to go the same route he did a season ago. That is by earning offers through camping all summer long. Wisconsin won’t be looking to take on too many wide receivers this class and are high on a number of other prospects, but Tranquill is an intriguing target to put in the slot for Wisconsin. He’s already on record as stating that the coaching staff has told him if he “balls out” at camp an offer could be coming. This is one I would expect happens, as I’m a fan of what he’s put on tape and it could be that the coaching staff just needs to see it in person first.

Corde O’Neal (NR, ATH; Summit Argo, IL): If there’s a #MACtion school out there, chances are they’ve offered the 6’4″, 200-pound athlete already. However, O’Neal hasn’t earned an offer from any “Power 5” school—despite interest from UW, Minnesota and Syracuse. I don’t know if an offer is in his future based on UW’s needs and committed prospects, but he’s got some big upside to his game and if he ends up in the MAC, he could be a star in that league.

Markell Jones (3-star, RB; Columbus, IN): Wisconsin is in the position to be rather picky with the offers they give out at running back in the 205 class and Jones is looking to be the latest in the group. However, it could be an uphill climb given recent events and 4-star backs that Wisconsin may be on the verge of flipping. I do like what I see in Jones’ game, but there’s a reason the Badgers haven’t already offered and I don’t think one comes given who already has offers out there and the need to likely wait till fall to see where the chips fall. Look for Jones to be a backup offer later in the game if anything.

Sam Madden (3-star, OT; Barnegat, NJ): Madden is already connected to the Wisconsin football program, as his cousin is John Moffitt. There’s little doubting the skill Madden possesses and he will be one of the numerous 2015 prospects not actually camping. This is one prospect that will be on commitment watch here at MTB, as he’s had UW on top of his list for some time now.

Michael Weber (4-star, RB; Detroit, MI): Wisconsin is in a massive battle against Michigan State and Ohio State for the commitment of Weber and this weekend is vital to the chances of UW staying in this race. Additionally, this is a vital recruitment because of the implications of getting an in with Cass Tech High School in Michigan. Landing a player or two from there opens up big time doors for UW against both Michigan schools and Ohio State too.

Joshua Alabi (3-star, DE; Detroit, MI): The Badgers have already landed a pair of teammates in the 2015 recruiting cycle, but landing a pair like Weber and Alabi would be a major coup for the Badgers and could make this a very special class. UW isn’t asking him to go through the actual camp, but will be on an unofficial visit. This could be even more important than Weber’s visit, as UW has to overcome Tennessee and Michigan State (who are in his top three along with Wisconsin).
