Badgers 2014 football camp primer

Duke Shelley (3-star, CB; Tucker, GA): At 5’8″, 165-pounds, Shelley is on the small side compared to what UW is recruiting at corner, but one look at his tape and it’s undeniable that there’s some impressive talent there (and a crap ton of speed). It’s a three-way battle for the Georgia prospect and continuing to grab talent from the state will be vital to Andersen’s plans in the future. He won’t be participating in camp like most of the big names around for the 2015 class.

Vincent Hughes (NR, OT; Franklin, WI): A classic under the radar guy for Wisconsin, and one that could pounce on an offer if it were to come. While Hughes isn’t massive (6’6″, 255 pounds) he has the frame to put on plenty of weight. This could be an offer to watch for after this camp is over, as long as he shows consistency in his technique, otherwise it may not happen for the Milwaukee-area native.

Omari Stringer (3-star, S; Crete, IL): UW offered Stringer just a few days ago, and the Badgers jumped to the top of the chart for the 3-star Illinois native. At 6’4″ and 208 pounds, he’s a big and rangy safety who flat out crushes as a hitter. His tape is fun to watch, and speaking of that, we’ll be watching to see if he is going to commit this weekend. Indiana, Minnesota and Missouri are also in the mix here and a great visit (no camp participation again) could really set UW up for a commitment after the weekend or down the not-so-distant road.

Jaxson Brown (NR, S; Eau Claire, WI): While plenty of the 2015 prospects won’t be putting the pads on, Brown will be. He’ll be hoping for an offer from Wisconsin, but it may not come depending on the way the recruiting board looks after this weekend. He came away from a camp at Iowa State without an offer last weekend and will also camp at Minnesota the week after UW’s camp. Many will compare Brown to Jim Leonhard, if for no other reason than they are both a bit undersized at the high school level, but Brown isn’t as athletic at Leonhard was and may be one of the preferred walk-on’s out of this class without a spectacular performance at camp.

Jake Whalen (3-star, LB; Wausau, WI): It is a small mystery to me how Wisconsin hasn’t offered Whalen just yet, having seen plenty of him on highlight reels in my hometown area. That said, it will be interesting to see how Nick Thomas’ commitment affects this offer during camp. UW is in on some other 3-star kids and higher that already hold offers. Whalen will likely impress at camp from what I have seen, and that means it will be hard not to offer him and help show that UW is keeping its best talent at home. If the offer comes, look for a commitment nearly on the spot.
