The University of Wisconsin football team hasn’t had a lot going on in the recruiting department, but this weekend was bound to be much different thanks to a camp and some unofficial visitors. On Saturday night the unexpected happened, with three-star safety Seth Currens giving his verbal pledge to the Badgers.
Currens, a junior at Pickerington (Ohio) Central, chose the Badgers over offers from Illinois, Bowling Green, Marshall, Ohio, Toledo and a host of other MAC schools.
It was the visit that secured the three-star safeties commitment, who had the Badgers on top of his list but was unsure about the feeling he would have once he visited campus. That visit sealed the deal, according to Evan Flood of Badger247.
“I knew they were probably one of my top schools, but once I got here, saw the campus, met the coaches, it was definitely a place that gave me a good feeling. This is where I want to be,” Currens told Badger247.
Currens becomes the fifth member of the Badgers 2016 recruiting class, and one of the most solid as well. He has indicated his recruitment is over and he won’t be fielding calls or anything from other schools.
As a player, Currens is the third-highest rated player to pledge to the Badgers in this class. He is rated as the No. 95 safety in the country and the No. 57 player in the state of Ohio.
The numbers may not jump off the page, but his film sure does. Currens finished his junior season with seven interceptions and 42 tackles as a free safety. On film, you can see his athleticism and that alone was reason enough fo rthe Badgers to be interested in him. He clearly has great football instincts and a nose for the ball. While he may not jump off the page in measurables, we’ve see UW have major success with these type of players out of Ohio in the past.
More than anything, UW getting a player this early in the process out of Ohio is huge. Wisconsin had largely ignored the state when Gary Andersen was coach, but with Chryst and offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph’s ties to the state, UW has gotten back in to the talent-rich state in a big way.
With his commitment, the Badgers shot up the 247sports team composite rankings. UW moved from No. 60 to No. 53 nationally, and are No. 10 in the Big Ten. However, only four schools have fewer commits in the 2016 class than the Badgers (Iowa and Illinois w/ 4, Indiana and Purdue w/ 1)
Adding Currens helps shore up a position that will be in flux in 2016, as UW will see both Michael Caputo and Tanner McEvoy graduate. Given those departures, Currens commitment likely leaves room for two to three more safeties in the 2016 class.
Wisconsin is heavily involved with four-star safety Eric Burrell and also involved with the secondary trio from Katy (Texas) High School — Collin Wilder, Travis Whillock and Jake Funk.
Having Currens on board may speed up some timelines at the position, but the Badgers are in good positions with each of the top five targes that this commitment won’t affect anything too much on the negative side of things.
