This past weekend was magical for the Wisconsin Badgers. They managed to wrestle control of the Big Ten West away from everyone else in the division, had a record-setting offensive performance and the defense wasn’t too bad. Needless to say, for those recruits on hand it was a helpful scenario.
On Tuesday, one of the recruits in attendance, cornerback T.J. Griffin, made his verbal pledge to the Badgers public knowledge. According to our recruiting partners at Badger247, Griffin made the pledge quickly after returning home from his official visit.
The 3-star recruit made his commitment to Wisconsin over offers from the likes of Oregon, West Virginia, Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest just to name a few.
More importantly, this could be the start of something important to the Badgers in a state they’ve been fighting hard to win in — Virginia. It was the first commitment from a player in the state since assistant coach Chris Beatty began recruiting the state hard upon arrival in Madison.
Getting a foot in the door like this in one of the hardest to recruit states in the country is a huge win for Beatty and the Badgers. If this leads to more players in the future we could look back on this recruitment and commitment as one of the biggest in the Andersen era.
Griffin comes to the Badgers from Virginia Beach (Va.) Ocean Lakes high school, stands 5-9 and weight 180 pounds. He is also the No. 90-ranked cornerback by the 247Sports composite rankings and the No. 38-ranked player in the state of Virginia.
With this addition, the Badgers are likely close to done at cornerback, as Griffin is the fourth player to commit at the position. He joins Titus Booker, Takadrae Williams, and X’zaviae Ausborne in the 2015 class.
Taking a look at his film from this season, it’s hard not to think of Sojourn Shelton when seeing Griffin. The two are shorter, but very strong cornerbacks with speed to burn. Additionally, Griffin appears to not be afraid to hit and hit hard as a cornerback.
With his commitment the Badgers remain at No. 26 in the national 247Sports composite rankings and are also steady at No. 3 in the Big Ten rankings.
