Badgers Crumble in Home Opener

A pair of early goals weren't enough for the Wisconsin men's hockey team that fell 5-4 at the hands of Colorado College Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin didn't waste anytime getting on the board. Michael Mersch found the back of the net just 1:29 into the opening period.

Brad Navin scored his first of the year minutes later to extend the Badgers' lead to 2-0, an advantage that would hold until the first intermission.

But, the next two goals belonged to the Tigers. Hunter Fejes it the lamp 6:35 into the second period. Less than two minutes later, Mike Boivin torched the twine on the power play with a one-timer from close range to knot the game at 2-2.

Jake McCabe put the Badgers back on top with his first goal of the season under a minute into the third.

Scott Winkler answered for the Tigers at the 5:02 mark to tie the game once again. William Rapuzzi scored midway through the period to put CC back on top.

But, the Badgers refused to go away. Keegan Meuer scored from the red line on backhand to pull the Badgers back to even.

Alexander Krushelnyski took advantage of a bad pass deep in the Wisconsin zone and dealt the decisive blow just 25 seconds into the overtime period.

Meuer and Morgan Zulinick led the offensive charge for UW with two points a piece.

Goaltender Joel Rumpel stopped 34 shots in the loss.

The Badgers, who have now lost their last five games against CC, fall to 1-3-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in WCHA play. The two teams wrap up the series Saturday night at the Kohl Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
