With the move over here we’re a few days behind in giving you are usual weekly look at the Badgers in the NFL. Thankfully for the Packers and many of the Badgers in the NFL things aren’t over as last weekend saw as many as 8 former Badgers take the field in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.
Up first on the game docket for the weekend was the Houston Texans taking on the Cincinnati Bengals in the Texans’ first ever playoff game.
That also meant a lot of Badgers in the mix and most didn’t disappoint that’s for sure. Houston won this one going away 31-10 over the Bengals. On the winning side were Owen Daniels (2 catches for 29 yards), Garrett Graham (inactive), and JJ Watt (1INT for a TD, 1 sack, 2 tackles). Heading home for the offseason were the Bengals’ Chris Pressley (no stats but was lead blocker for RB’s) and DT Nick Hayden (inactive)
The “other” game of Saturday’s action was supposed to feature two former Badger LB’s, but the Saints’ Jonathan Casillas was made inactive with a knee injury as the Saints took down the Lions, 45-28. On the losing end of things was DeAndre Levy (2 tackles).
Sunday had Badgers playing in both games once again as Pittsburgh and Denver played one of the most thrilling Wild Card round games in awhile, ending with Tim Tebow’s throw to (who else) Demarius Thomas, who scampered nearly 60 yards on his own for a game winning OT TD. On the losing side was former Badgers RB John Clay (1 carry, 1 yard).
In the first matchup of the day it was the New York Giants vs. the Atlanta Falcons. Once again in the playoffs Matty Ice looked more like Matty Zima as the Giants won 24-2. Former Badgers TE Travis Beckum had a small hand in the win (1 catch, 7 yards).
Up next we’ll see WR Lee Evans and the Baltimore Ravens enter the mix as they take on the Houston Texans. Addtionally Travis Beckum will be back in his home state for the 1st time as a member of the Giants as they take on the Packers at Lambeau Field. One other Badger will take to the field for the first time in the playoffs and that’s backup QB Scott Tolzien with the 49ers, who take on New Orleans.
As we’ve done in the regular season, our Badgers in the NFL Player of the Week award was up for grabs and this one was very easy. JJ Watt was a huge spark for the Texans as he made one of the most outstanding plays of the weekend overall with his INT grab and scamper to the endzone. His sack a bit later was also massive in helping to keep momentum on the Texans’ side of the game. For that he is our Player of the Week and could be well on his way to the Player of the Year award as well.
