The Wisconsin men's hockey team opened up WCHA play with a 2-0 win over Minnesota-Duluth Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.
For the third time in as many games, the Badgers drew first blood. Tyler Barnes put Wisconsin up 1-0 when he lit the lamp in the latter moments of the first period.
At the 14:08 mark of the second, Mark Zengerle netted his second of the season with a power play goal to extend the edge to 2-0.
That was all of the offense Wisconsin would need as goaltender Joel Rumpel stopped all 29 shots that he faced en route to picking up the shutout.
UMD out-shot Wisconsin 29-26.
Tha Badgers' penalty kill unit was a perfect 2-2.
Zengerle led the offensive charge for the Badgers, recording two points. Defenseman Jake McCabe also collected two points thanks to a pair of assists.
With the win, the Badgers improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the WCHA. They will attempt to secure the sweep Saturday night at 7 p.m.
