The Wisconsin Badgers may have gotten lucky in a way no one in the athletic department was thinking when Gary Andersen was hired as head coach. See, it didn’t take long for his relationships inside Utah to pay off, and one of the biggest names in the state just so happened to be a high 3-star quarterback by the name of Austin Kafentzis.
It didn’t even take a year for that relationship to turn in to a commitment from the dual-threat dynamo, and ever since he came on the Badgers’ radar it has become clear just how special a talent Wisconsin could be getting.
Week 4 of the high school football season proved exactly why that is the case as Kafentzis and his Jordan Beetdiggers went to Colorado and whopped up on Cherry Creek High School. Jordan came away as 38-14 victors and Kafentzis became perhaps the best player in the history of Utah high school football.
We got a great look at just how good Kafentzis has become in that win, where he was 22-of-33 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns to one interception. He also added 154 yards on 24 carries on the ground for 467 total yards.
Kafentzis’ 154-yard performance leaves him just 18 yards short of the all-time rushing record in the state of Utah, and he was already fourth all-time nationally in total yards coming in to this game according to MaxPreps sports.
To date this season, the Beetdiggers are 4-0 and Kafentzis is the main reason for that. He’s completed 55.5 percent of his passes for 922 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
On the ground, Kafentzis has racked up 751 yards and nine touchdowns, while averaging 7.7 yards per carry. He’s also already broken the all-time record for rushing attempts with his 24 carries this past weekend.
There’s still plenty of football left, but with the numbers he is putting up, Kafentzis is setting himself up to become a huge candidate for national player of the year honors, which he won as a sophomore by MaxPreps.
