Badgers Up One to No. 6 in Latest College Football Playoff Rankings

Last week the College Football Playoff picture looked really tough for the Wisconsin Badgers. One week later and some craziness continuing in college football and UW finds itself on the doorstep of a College Football Playoff berth.

That’s because the Badgers are No. 6 in this week’s College Football Playoff poll, after getting seemingly stiffed at No. 7 last week.

A loss by previous No. 5 Louisville to Houston this past weekend certainly helped, as the Cardinals dropped all the way to No. 11 and opened up its spot in the poll.

The top four stayed the same as last week with everyone winning this past weekend. Alabama is still No. 1, followed by No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Clemson.

What is going to be really interesting is what will unfold in the final two weeks of before the College Football Playoff field is really set. Sitting at No. 5 are the Washington Huskies, who have just one loss on the season and still have rival Washington State this weekend along with a matchup with either Colorado or a rematch with USC on the docket.

On the other hand, Wisconsin has the Goofs on Saturday afternoon and a date with someone inside the top 7 of the College Football Playoff rankings in the Big Ten championship ahead of them if they can win on Saturday.

If that matchup is with Michigan or Ohio State, a UW win in the title game is likely to get them in. If that matchup is with No. 7 Penn State…well, that is a lot more difficult to see the Badgers controlling its own destiny.

A resume matchup with a Pac-12 champion Washington vs. Wisconsin’s resume is going to be really interesting to watch. Only those committee members in the room know the answer to those scenarios.

Of course, that all means the Badgers have to take care of business and make a crazy run to the Big Ten championship. At that point, just being in the conversation for a chance at the national title on the field against anyone is incredible to think of.

Had you spoken this type of scenario to anyone in or outside the fanbase before the season, chances are you would’ve gotten some strange looks. Now? Not so much.

We’ll see what unfolds in the next two weeks, but just being in the discussion this late in the season means Wisconsin is playing some pretty impressive football this season.
