MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin wrestling team has earned a No. 8 preseason ranking, announced by InterMat today. The Badgers check in tied for eighth with Iowa State with 35 points. Three Big Ten Conference teams, Penn State, Iowa and Minnesota, top the list.
In addition to the team ranking, five Badgers received rankings in their weight classes.
Senior Tyler Graff is ranked No. 2 at 133 lbs. Last season, Graff earned his third All-America honor with a third-place finish at the NCAA championships.
Redshirt freshman Jesse Thielke is the only freshman to earn a ranking at 141 lbs. Thielke makes his debut at No. 10.
Redshirt freshman Isaac Jordan earned a No. 7 ranking at 157 lbs. Jordan posted an impressive 23-2 record in open tournaments last season.
Senior Jackson Hein, an NCAA qualifier at 197 lbs. a year ago, starts the season with a No. 13 ranking at 184 lbs. This season will be Hein’s first at the lower weight.
2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Connor Medbery starts the season with a No. 6 ranking at heavyweight. Medbery qualified for the NCAA championship last season, finishing the season with a No. 10 ranking.
The Badgers start the season on Nov. 1 with their annual Intrasquad Scrimmage in the UW Field House at 7 p.m. Wisconsin opens the season in Madison on Dec. 6 when it welcomes No. 13 Illinois to the UW Field House for a 7 p.m. match.
