Barry Alvarez has not been shy when it comes to discussing changes in the landscape of college football.
Now it’s looking possible he could play a much bigger role than anyone initially could have guessed.
The University of Wisconsin athletic director has made the initial list of potential members to serve on the first College Football Playoff selection committee, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The committee, which will begin with the 2014 season, is still in its introductory stage. While who and how many will serve still need to be answered, one thing is for sure. The job won’t be easy. It will be March Madness, with a whole slew of rabid fan bases thrown in to make things a little more interesting.
What is known, though, is that Alvarez is among a group of over 100 individuals that encompass all facets of the game. These include former coaches, athletic directors and other members of administration. The goal is to knock that down to less than 20 members who will then determine the placing of the teams into the national semifinals and also the four other New Year’s bowl games.
What does this mean for the Badgers? It shows once again that Alvarez is a very-respected man when it comes to the college football landscape. Often times he has seemed to be the voice of the Big Ten and this confirms that the college football world is listening.
Obviously the finalizing of the committee is still quite a ways down the road, as Alvarez himself says he has no idea of a future timetable, but just being mentioned at this stage is an accomplishment.
Hopefully this is not the last time Wisconsin and the College Football Playoff are linked together.
