The new year is off to a pretty go start for Mathew Barzal.
On Wednesday it was announced that Barzal would represent the Islanders at the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend in San Jose. The appearance will be the 21-year-old’s first of his NHL career.
Barzal earned the honors with a strong start to the 2018-19 season. Through 38 games, Barzal leads the Islanders in points with 36 and in assists with 26. His 10 goals are fourth on the team.
Barzal is also riding a five-game point streak to end 2018 and was named the second star of the week by the NHL. On Saturday, he recorded a natural hat-trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Last season, Josh Bailey and John Tavares were selected to participate in the NHL All-Star Weekend.
